HBA have completed this 4no. bedroom private residential house, in the curtilage of a Listed farmhouse in Dorking, near Box Hill.

The farmhouse and barns are situated within the Green Belt and on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)

The existing barns have been reconfigured with new-build link buildings to connect them. This new link acts as a modern cloister defining a new central courtyard and a sensitive new extension helps to enclose this new space.

The main ground floor living spaces all open out onto this external planted courtyard, linking the inside with the outside in this rural setting.

The black-stained larch cladding is set out horizontally on the historic volumes and vertically on the modern extensions to make the new interventions legible.

Internally, the client wanted the rooms filled with natural light and a simple palette of materials. HBA have therefore located rooflights and windows carefully to provide light and framed views of the surrounding countryside with reveals lined with oak.
